If you’ve ever read the ingredient list on our handcrafted soaps, you may have noticed something called Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) or simply lye. At first glance, it might sound a bit too “chemical”—and technically, it is. But don’t worry. Here’s exactly why NaOH is essential in real soapmaking, and why it’s nothing to fear.

What is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)?

NaOH, also known as lye or caustic soda, is a strong alkaline substance. In traditional cold process soapmaking—the method we proudly use at Maniza Ibiza—it plays a crucial role. Without lye, there would be no soap. It’s the ingredient that transforms oils and butters into soap through a natural process called saponification.

But Is It Still in the Soap?

Here’s the important part: No Sodium Hydroxide remains in the final soap. It completely reacts with the oils, resulting in a gentle, skin-loving soap and naturally occurring glycerin—a moisturizing treasure that your skin will adore.

In today’s world, “chemical” often gets a bad reputation. But not everything that sounds chemical is harmful—and not everything “natural” is automatically safe.
